Evaluation

Overall I enjoyed this semester a lot more than the previous. I must admit, it has been difficult and extremely challenging for me. I’ve had a lot of breakdowns and issues with blogs and the shoots in general. I feel like Makeup is a lot harder compared to Digital Image Production. There’s so much work to get done in little time and this really worried me.

This semester was all about special effects. I enjoyed the practicals, however not so much the gothic horror part. I’m more on the fashion side of things so I don’t really like SFX as a whole however I still enjoyed each and every single one of the practicals. What I found most difficult was the seminars, where we studied Gothic horror. I didn’t really understand the language used in the lessons, nor the topic itself as a whole. I do enjoy period work however, such as learning and researching of the Victorian era.

The continuity assessment was a lot more difficult than I imagined. I understood how hard it is to be working in the industry on set. I learnt that I must take notes and pictures of whatever I do whether it’s for continuous reasons or not. I was pleased with the images on the first week however not so much on the second week. I discussed this with Sue and she said we are all here to learn, and no one is expected to be perfect. This made me feel a lot better. I feel like when I get something wrong, or unhappy with a result of my work, I learn more out of it and understand areas where I need to improve.

The Claudia task was probably the hardest part of the unit. I’m not so confident with my SFX skills however I decided to completely step out my comfort zone and do something different. I was happy with the results of my images and thought I actually did well. The only part that really frustrated me was the research and writing part. In order to improve my reading and writing skills, I should read a lot more during the summer and prepare myself for second year.

If I had the chance to do this project again, I’d probably not leave everything until last minute. I did start working on the brief as soon as we got it, however I feel like I invested a lot of time and effort into unnecessary areas of the unit. The reason I did this is because last semester I was told to do more than I am asked. I will continue to do this for future projects but I will have to manage my time a lot more wisely.

Creating gelatine burns

Below is step-by-step of how I created my third degree burn:

1. Firstly, I applied barrier cream in order to make the removal easier.

2. I then boiled water in a kettle and poured it into a mixing bowl.

3. Next, I poured the gelatine inside the bowl and mixed this until it became thick, similar to porridge.

4. I waited for this to cool down, and applied it on the area I wanted to create my burn on using a wooden spatula.

5. I applied about 2-3 layers of this.

6. Once this had dried, using my supra colours, I coloured in the burn with a brush/stipple sponge. I used colours such as bright red, maroon and black for this.

7. Lastly, I applied artificial blood (same products I had used for my bullet wound) in some areas of the burn.

Dirtying down

In order to create the dirtying down effect, I decided to buy dirt powders from Kryolan. Dirt powders are used to give the skin a dirty, dusty look. The realistic colours of these powders create a natural look. They have a loose consistency that can easily be applied to enhance a characters makeup. Dirt powder has the same look and feel of actual dirt and can also be used to create a realistic effect of being covered with sooty ash. It is safe to use on hair, skin and clothing.

I purchased three shades, brown, black and grey:

The dirtying down powder can be applied on with a brush, stipple sponge or powder puff. It can be mixed with grease paint or mud spray to stimulate mud on the body. The powders can also be altered by mixing them.

For the shoot, I will create smudges using the different shades with a brush, puff or my fingers depending on what effect I want. I have to make sure I go in the hairline, neck, behind the ears and hands/fingers for a realistic effect.
