Evaluation

Overall I enjoyed this semester a lot more than the previous. I must admit, it has been difficult and extremely challenging for me. I’ve had a lot of breakdowns and issues with blogs and the shoots in general. I feel like Makeup is a lot harder compared to Digital Image Production. There’s so much work to get done in little time and this really worried me.

This semester was all about special effects. I enjoyed the practicals, however not so much the gothic horror part. I’m more on the fashion side of things so I don’t really like SFX as a whole however I still enjoyed each and every single one of the practicals. What I found most difficult was the seminars, where we studied Gothic horror. I didn’t really understand the language used in the lessons, nor the topic itself as a whole. I do enjoy period work however, such as learning and researching of the Victorian era.

The continuity assessment was a lot more difficult than I imagined. I understood how hard it is to be working in the industry on set. I learnt that I must take notes and pictures of whatever I do whether it’s for continuous reasons or not. I was pleased with the images on the first week however not so much on the second week. I discussed this with Sue and she said we are all here to learn, and no one is expected to be perfect. This made me feel a lot better. I feel like when I get something wrong, or unhappy with a result of my work, I learn more out of it and understand areas where I need to improve.

The Claudia task was probably the hardest part of the unit. I’m not so confident with my SFX skills however I decided to completely step out my comfort zone and do something different. I was happy with the results of my images and thought I actually did well. The only part that really frustrated me was the research and writing part. In order to improve my reading and writing skills, I should read a lot more during the summer and prepare myself for second year.

If I had the chance to do this project again, I’d probably not leave everything until last minute. I did start working on the brief as soon as we got it, however I feel like I invested a lot of time and effort into unnecessary areas of the unit. The reason I did this is because last semester I was told to do more than I am asked. I will continue to do this for future projects but I will have to manage my time a lot more wisely.

Creating gelatine burns

Below is step-by-step of how I created my third degree burn:

1. Firstly, I applied barrier cream in order to make the removal easier.

2. I then boiled water in a kettle and poured it into a mixing bowl.

3. Next, I poured the gelatine inside the bowl and mixed this until it became thick, similar to porridge.

4. I waited for this to cool down, and applied it on the area I wanted to create my burn on using a wooden spatula.

5. I applied about 2-3 layers of this.

6. Once this had dried, using my supra colours, I coloured in the burn with a brush/stipple sponge. I used colours such as bright red, maroon and black for this.

7. Lastly, I applied artificial blood (same products I had used for my bullet wound) in some areas of the burn.

Dirtying down

In order to create the dirtying down effect, I decided to buy dirt powders from Kryolan. Dirt powders are used to give the skin a dirty, dusty look. The realistic colours of these powders create a natural look. They have a loose consistency that can easily be applied to enhance a characters makeup. Dirt powder has the same look and feel of actual dirt and can also be used to create a realistic effect of being covered with sooty ash. It is safe to use on hair, skin and clothing.

I purchased three shades, brown, black and grey:

The dirtying down powder can be applied on with a brush, stipple sponge or powder puff. It can be mixed with grease paint or mud spray to stimulate mud on the body. The powders can also be altered by mixing them.

For the shoot, I will create smudges using the different shades with a brush, puff or my fingers depending on what effect I want. I have to make sure I go in the hairline, neck, behind the ears and hands/fingers for a realistic effect.

Practicing bullet wounds

Below is step-by-step of how I created my bullet wound:

1. Firstly, I applied a thin layer of spirit gum using a cotton bud on the area I wanted to create the wound on and waited for it to become tacky.

2. I then rolled up cine wax into a rounded ball (not too big) and placed it on the spirit gum.

3. Once the ball was stuck on, using my spatula, I blended out the edges of the wax onto the skin. I made sure the edges are smooth by using Vaseline to help me do this.

4. Using the end of a brush (preferably an eye-shadow one) I made a hole through the centre of the ball I created with the wax.

5. Next, I blended this hole out onto the skin, so it sits perfectly.

6. Using liquid latex and a cotton bud, I went over the wound to smoothen it out and waited for this to dry.

7. It’s now time for the colouring. First I covered the wax with foundation so it camouflages onto the skin. I dabbed this on as dragging it may remove the wax. I then set this with translucent powder.

8. Using my supra colours, I coloured the centre of the hole I created with dark colours such as black and maroon.

9. Now using my reds and light purples, I went over the surrounding of the hole using a stipple sponge. It’s optional to add blues, yellows and greens to create a bruise effect.

10. Lastly I filled in the centre of the wound with artificial blood.

For the blood, I had already purchased one from 'Makeup International London' however when I applied it onto the skin, it was too pink and unrealistic. I decided to buy black and red food colouring from a food store and mix these in with the artificial blood to achieve a thick, dark red effect. I also used simulated abrasion blood on the wound which is very similar to wound filler.

Claudia design idea

This is my face chart for Claudia. I have used supra colours, artificial liquid blood and dirt powder in order to achieve this look. I will be creating a black on the left eye, and a bullet wound on the right hand side of the forehead. The body/clothing will be covered in blood and dirt powder. I will also be ripping bits of my models top in order to make the overall look seem realistic.

I created the bullet wound using cine wax for a 3D effect.

Mrs. Laderman design idea

This is a sketch of where I'd like to place my third degree burns on Mrs. Laderman. I wasn't able to use gelatine powder on paper therefore I had to use my supra colours, and artificial blood in order to show how and where I want the colouring. I want the burns to go down toward the neck, all the way onto the shoulders.

Quentin moodboard

This is my moodboard for Quentin. I won't actually be re-creating Quentin however if I was to, I'd do a pale gothic makeup look on him. I want Quentin to portray the mysterious 'young man' that helps Shelly, explained in my previous blog posts. In order to achieve this look, I'd make use of my white supra colour and purchase light contacts such as red or white for my model. I'd also prefer for my model to not have facial hair as I want a clean look, however for the brows, I want a full on messy look. For the hair, I want it to look quite big and all over the place. I'd probably do a side parting and make a 'quiff' sort of style.

Mrs. Laderman moodboard

This is my moodboard for Mrs. Laderman. I want to create third degree burns using gelatine powder on the face, coming down along her arm. I will be colouring the blood using supra colours, blood flesh, liquid artificial blood and maybe pus. In order to make the overall application seem natural, I will be adding colour and to areas where appropriate. My main focus for this character is on the face, therefore I want the hair to be simple and out of the way. I will be travelling to my mum for this shoot, therefore I won't be able to shoot in a studio. It will be at dark, outside where the attack would have taken place.

Claudia moodboard

This is my moodboard for Claudia. I want to create a bullet wound on her head. I will also be making some areas of the face darker, and some filled with blood. I want to create a dirty-down effect on her body as the shoot will be taking place outside, where the fight happened. I'm still not sure how I will be styling the hair, but i'll probably do a messy bun to make the overall look seem realistic.

Hemlock Grove moodboard

This is my overall moodboard for Hemlock Grove. I in particularly like the images showing the use of SFX.

Claudia – Shelly:

In Hemlock Grove, Shelly is said to be Roman’s sister. She is described to be ‘monstrous-looking, yet highly intelligent and kind.’ During one of the scenes, ‘Chasseur is killed by Olivia, and Peter and Roman discover that the murderer is actually Christina, the girl who accused Peter of the murderers. Christina turned herself into a werewolf by drinking water from one of the tracks left by Peter while he was in wolf form. Unable to control her actions as a werewolf, Christina's mental state deteriorated and caused her to become insane. Due to her insanity she attacked anyone she saw as being sexually promiscuous due to her own confusion over her burgeoning sexuality. Peter and Christina fight to the death in their wolf forms. Peter miraculously survives, but Shelley, who threw herself into the fight to avenge Christina's last victim, is shot by the Sheriff because he sees her holding Christina's (now human again) body.’

Hemlock grove (2015) in Wikipedia. Available at:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemlock_Grove#Synopsis (Accessed: 18 April 2016).

Right at the end of this scene Shelly is said to have ran off, not to be seen again.

Backstory:

I want Claudia to be Shelly in Hemlock Grove. There are a few facts I discovered about Shelly’s character which I thought would link in with Claudia quite well, for example:
  • Shelley is hideous to society, but she's like a child on the inside.
  • She meets a young man who is letting her hide out in his basement. He's very crucial in helping her evolve throughout the seasons – I want this portray this ‘young man’ as Quentin.
  • She has a therapist – portraying she has mental problems, therefore needs help in order to overcome them.
  • She just wants to be a normal teenage girl
  • A compelling character
  • She’s on the run, being hunted
  • Rejected by society – this is similar to Claudia’s situation; where she not accepted by her parents, therefore lacks love and affection.
  • She is the beating heart of Hemlock Grove that is somehow uncorrupted by everything that's taking place around her.
  • Shelly becomes the surrogate for especially young female viewers of the show.

Shelly’s character stood out to me as I believe she is somebody young women can relate to. She looks in the mirror everyday, and only sees imperfections. She is a strong woman, with a pure heart which makes her a commanding character. The reason I want Claudia to portray this character is because she is described to be ‘psychotic.’ Claudia is never content with her appearance as she is said to ‘model herself on a variety of girls, often twisting her look’ – which is very similar to Shelly’s situation as she also doesn’t approve of the way she looks.

Claudia is said to be a cheerful character in this ‘mad world of hers’. Again, Shelly is also said to be hideous to society, whereas in actual facts, she’s like a child on the inside.

Shelly

Chosen keyword:

I chose the word ‘save us’ as I believe both Shelly and Claudia need to be saved. Neither of them is to blame for their situation in life and are looking for a way out. They wish to be someone else, and live a normal life like other teenage girls however this isn’t possible for the neither of them, and they learn to accept this.

Makeup:

For my Claudia shoot, the scene I am re-creating is where she (Shelly) gets shot by the Sherriff. I want to create a bullet wound on a particular area of Claudia’s face (haven’t decided yet). I wish to shoot this outside, as I believe that is where the incident is most likely to have happened. I’ll need to practice bullet wounds, and look more into them. I also want to create a slight dirt effect on the face and body – to show the effect of how intense the fight was that she had thrown herself in.

Mrs. Laderman – Olivia:

‘Olivia resumes an affair with her late husband's brother, Dr. Norman Godfrey. At several points during the series Norman tries to break away from Olivia but ultimately fails due to his desire for her, despite him remembering several warnings from his brother about how Olivia emotionally preys on people.’

As I mentioned above, during one of the scenes, Chasseur is killed by Olivia. It is also revealed that ‘centuries ago Olivia was impregnated by a gypsy she tried to run away with as a young girl. The man abandoned her shortly after they escaped (taking her jewels with him), and she was found a few days later, bloody, from having cut off the tail she had (the origin of the scar on her lower back). She was brought home, and turned into an unnatural beauty over the course of her pregnancy. Now resentful of any gypsy, she gave up the child to grow up with a lowborn old swineherd named Rumancek, showing that the family is descended from Olivia.

She also muses that while she married JR Godfrey, she fell in love with his brother Norman, who actually fathered Roman. At Roman's 18th birthday, Olivia takes him to Shelley's attic where he discovers Letha's (not actually stillborn) baby. With Olivia's mind controlling powers, she makes her son remember that it was him who had sex with Letha (her mind having "made up" the "angel" to cope with this). Roman then slits his wrists to "not let his mother win" but this actually finishes his transformation; he grows fangs and it is insinuated that he drinks from Letha's and his baby.’

Hemlock grove (2015) in Wikipedia. Available at:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemlock_Grove#Synopsis (Accessed: 18 April 2016).

Backstory:

I want Mrs. Laderman to be Olivia in Hemlock Grove. Oliva is a mother therefore I’m assuming she is in her 40’s, similar to Mrs. Laderman. There are a few facts I discovered about Olivia’s character which I thought would link in with Mrs. Laderman quite well, for example:
  • She is a ‘beautiful and feared woman
  • A wealthy widow with a mysterious Romanian background who stands in control of the Godfrey family fortune.
  • Highly manipulative person, demonstrating symptoms of clinical psychopathy, willing to do anything to forward her own agenda.
  • She has exhibited clearly amoral and even malevolent tendencies, including killing several of her children immediately after their births, as well as forcing her then-seventeen-year-old son to rape his non-consenting cousin/half-sister.
  • Studied dramatic arts
  • She carries herself in the manner of someone who is seldom refused and never disobeyed.’

Olivia is said to be Shelly and Juliet’s mother. Throughout the second season of the series, she only wears black. ‘Due to Olivia's immortality only certain things can kill her. She also cannot be killed by the same ways a normal human can.’

Quote reference: Olivia Godfrey (no date) Available at: http://hemlockgrove.wikia.com/wiki/Olivia_Godfrey (Accessed: 18 April 2016).

In my version of the series, I want Mrs. Laderman to remain being the mother of Shelly (Claudia). Olivia, similar to Mrs. Laderman ‘changes into a variety of alter egos.’ She’s also said to be Claudia’s friend, which makes sense is this case as they’re now mother/daughter. Olivia is believed to have not aged ever since her young years. Her appearance means everything to her. She is very different to her daughter, Shelly. She’s done harm to a lot of her close ones, which is why I want to create a scene to show her burning. I want to show my audience that she is being punished – and that she will never be able to look the same.

Mrs. Laderman is suspected to have had evil plans on both Claudia and Quentin, similar to Olivia. In fact Olivia is such a disgraceful character in the series; she ‘mesmerised her own son, Roman to rape his cousin so that they would give birth to her granddaughter.’

In the last scene of the series, instead of Roman slitting his wrist to not let his mother win, I want him to throw acid on one side of her face. Roman hates his mother Olivia, and wishes for her to die however as I’ve mentioned above, Olivia cannot be killed the same way normal humans do, therefore the only way Roman can get back at his mother for all she’s done throughout her years, is to take her beauty away from her.

Olivia

Chosen keyword:

I chose the word ‘face’ as I want the main focus of my shoot to be on my model’s face. I also chose this word as I believe it best describes Mrs. Laderman and Olivia’s two-faced personality. They both seem to hide their inner selves and true colours.

Makeup:

For my Mrs. Laderman shoot, I’m obviously creating third-degree burns due to the acid attack. We’ve already practiced burns in Sue’s technical lesson therefore I have a rough idea of how I will be doing it. Instead of gelatine nuggets however I will be using powder. I will need to practice this in my own time in order to be prepared for my shoot. I will also be using my mum as my model, as it’s quite difficult to find middle-aged women that are willing to model for me.

Target demographics

‘Hemlock Grove is based on the novel by Brian McGreevy (who co-wrote much of the series with Lee Shipman), and appears at first glance to settle snugly alongside teens-to-thirties targeted fare like ‘The Vampire Diaries’ and ‘True Blood.’ However, the show is intended to have a wide appeal and has a large secondary target audience, such as people interested in horror, supernatural, or vampire shows.

It’s a supernatural soap opera for a niche audience; a strange concoction of genre credibility and homage, often risible dialogue and genuine out-of-the-blue oddness. Attempting to fix a single point of comparison is a useless endeavour; it’s all over the place in a way that will prove exhilaratingly unpredictable to some and immensely frustrating to others.

Many reviews on this certain TV series read like a list of things that are wrong with the show, but they are certainly part of its charm. It’s almost baffling how watchable it is. The off-kilter sensibility is beguiling in spite of and because of its inconsistency; it’s addictive because it keeps you on your toes, it keeps throwing these dark surprises at you. As a straight horror or a teen drama it would categorically fail but as a bizarre concoction of the two, with a dose of monster mythology thrown in, it somehow succeeds. Characters like Shelley, Clementine and Dr Price are great fun to watch, the two leads are solid and (perhaps the real test of a Netflix show) it definitely lends itself to bulk viewing.

Whether or not you enjoy Hemlock Grove doesn’t depend on whether you’re invested in the murder mystery; it depends on whether you can settle into the world it creates. For all the horror homages, the audience this will appeal to the most is a younger crowd who are just discovering the genre. When the show gets all of its ducks in a row it’s exciting, funny and scary. When it fails, it’s a clunky, hackneyed mess. But for the bulk of the running time it’s veering wildly in between, making for oddly compulsive viewing, and yes, we would welcome a second season. Many viewers won’t have the patience or the inclination for Hemlock Grove, but it’s genuinely unusual and quite mad, and there’ll always be an audience for that. For all its faults, we found it to be very watchable indeed.’

The Gothic Horror archetypes

During Kat’s seminar, we looked at how and why horror films are watched/read by certain genders/ages. Below are the notes I have taken down in lesson from the PowerPoint:

Gender – men:

Men are the expendable gender. To put it simply, men are neither supposed nor allowed to be dependant. They are expected to take care of others and themselves. And when they cannot or will not do it, then the assumption at the heart of the culture is that they are somehow less than men and therefore unworthy of help. An irony asserts itself; by being in need of help, men forfeit the right to it.

Female Horror archetypes:

  • Sex crazed bimbo
  • Badass babe
  • The smart one
  • The bitch
  • The invisible one
  • The witch
  • The postmodern
  • The final girl, e.g.: Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Scream, The Ring, Jeepers Creepers, Saw II, etc.

Blondes:
  • Slashers tend to prefer blondes.
  • Blondes make the best victims. They’re like virgin snow that shows up the bloody footprints – Alfred Hitchcock

Double Standard: Abuse – female on male:
  • It's humorous and funny?
  • Retribution
  • Women aren't really strong enough to harm a man, unless a weak man
  • Men have done something really bad to be injured by a woman
  • Women would only resort to violence when necessary

The Attraction to Horror:
  • Temptation to play God?
  • Interest/ fear of death
  • The possibility of salvation
  • The opportunity to see things that are taboo
  • Affinity with the monster within us all
  • Addressing man’s inhumanity to man
  • People like to be scared

Target Audience:
  • Male aged 14-35 years old
  • The reason why they want to fear of someone or something is because they want an adrenaline rush.
  • In the past, horror films or TV series were mainly enjoyed by white male teens. But nowadays, the biggest demographic is women. For instance, the demographic for 'The Walking Dead' is female who aged 18-49 years old.

Horror is a great vehicle for this demographic because it:
  • Has a limited amount of ideas to be explored
  • Often features metaphors for life
  • Offers cautionary tales (horrific consequences of the actions of the protagonists)
  • Explores social commentary
  • Explores fear of the unknown
  • Explores awareness of our own mortality and death
  • Feathers urban myths which attract them

Claudia, Quentin and Mrs. Laderman

For the second part of our Gothic Horror project, we have to choose two of these three characters, Claudia, Quentin and/or Mrs. Laderman in order to recreate them. We also need to choose a Horror TV series from a list Kat has provided us and make links between the two (characters and TV series). Below is a script given by Kat of the three characters:

Claudia:

Claudia is a girl in her twenties. As a child she was left alone to develop with little parental guidance and through her relationship with T.V. movies developed an unhealthy relationship with Horror films, believing this to be the way life really is.

All the scenes take place in various parts of Claudia’s apartment, which is European in style with a great deal of kitsch décor. She is agoraphobic and is kept in touch with the outside world by her neighbours who provide her with her every day requirements. She models herself on a variety of girls often twisting her look to suit whichever film she is watching at the time and there is often a nod to the main character in the current film within her appearance.

The script portrays her as psychotic and there is always the feeling that although her character is scripted/can be seen as humorous, danger is just around the corner. However all this is normal to Claudia and she is of a cheerful disposition in this mad world of hers.

Quentin:

Claudia has an imaginary boyfriend, Quentin, who is long suffering and a constant disappointment to her. They don’t live together but he visits regularly and they talk on the telephone if he can’t get in to see her. As he is part of her imagination his appearance changes to suit her mood. Sometimes he will be a David Beckham looking guy, whilst in another scene he will appear as a Pete Docherty type, Daniel Craig type or a Hollyoaks Babe. If she is having a bad day he will morph into an uncouth couch potato chav with all that brings with it.

He is as into the horror film genre as she and into role-playing to suit her whims and moods.
Claudia has a paranoid suspicion that he is constantly having affairs behind her back and keeps him firmly under her thumb, sometimes restraining him or keeping him prisoner in one of the rooms.

Mrs. Laderman:

Claudia’s neighbour in her 40’s. She alternately changes into a variety alter egos and is Claudia’s friend and confidant. Living in the apartment opposite, she was Claudia’s only link to the outside world. Although they are friends there is suspicion that Mrs L’, has designs on Quentin. I hadn’t watched any of the films/series on the list that Kat had provided us therefore it was hard for me to choose which I want to do especially as I’m not a fan of horror films. I looked them all up online, and found that Hemlock Grove caught my attention the most. There were a few I had heard of such as The Walking Dead; however I wanted to do something different that I hadn’t studied before.

‘Hemlock Grove is an American horror fantasy thriller television series. Executive produced by Eli Roth, developed by Brian McGreevy and Lee Shipman, and a production of Gaumont International Television, the series is based on McGreevy's novel of the same name. The show premiered April 19, 2013, with all 13 episodes made immediately available for online viewing.

The show examines the strange happenings in Hemlock Grove, a fictional town in Pennsylvania. Roman Godfrey, heir to the town's wealthy Godfrey family, befriends the town's newcomer, Peter Rumancek. Recent brutal murders in the town have stirred up rumours, and the two work together to shed light on the case while also hiding their own dark secrets.

On June 19, 2013, Netflix renewed Hemlock Grove for a second season of 10 episodes, to air in 2014. On July 18, 2013, Netflix earned the first Primetime Emmy Award nominations for original online only web television for the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards in 2013. Three of its online original series - Arrested Development, Hemlock Grove, and House of Cards - earned nominations.

The second season premiered on July 11, 2014. On September 2, 2014, Netflix renewed it for a third and final 10-episode season. The third season premiered on October 23, 2015.

Plot:

The series is set in the town of Hemlock Grove, Pennsylvania. The town is a mixture of extreme wealth and poverty, as the closing of the town's steel mill many years earlier caused many to lose their jobs. The town's main sources of employment are now the Godfrey Institute for Biomedical Technologies and Hemlock Acres Hospital. Heading the Institute which is rumoured to conduct sinister experiments on a daily basis is the imposing Olivia Godfrey (Famke Janssen), while Hemlock Acres' lead psychiatrist is Olivia's dead husband's brother, Dr. Norman Godfrey (Dougray Scott).

As season one opens, the town's rumour mill turns even more twisted, as two teenage girls are brutally killed and their bodies left for unsuspecting people to find the next day. Peter Rumancek (Landon Liboiron) a 17-year-old Romani boy is suspected of the crimes by some of the townsfolk; he is also rumoured to be a werewolf. Secretly he is a werewolf, and, along with the heir to the Godfrey estate, the troubled Roman Godfrey (Bill Skarsgård), he sets out to solve the mystery.

Rounding out the main cast of characters of the first season are Norman's daughter (Roman's cousin), the beautiful, Letha Godfrey (Penelope Mitchell) who claims the father of her unborn child is an angel from Heaven, and Christina Wendall (Freya Tingley), a lonely girl who becomes interested in Peter.

For season two, two former supporting characters were promoted to the main cast of characters: Peter's con-artist older cousin Destiny (Tiio Horn), who makes her living as a psychic medium, and Dr. Johann Pryce (Joel de la Fuente), the lead scientist of the Godfrey Institute, a brilliant but ruthless man of science, gifted with super-strength. A cult has arisen that is bent on destroying the supernatural creatures in Hemlock Grove by any means necessary. To make matters worse, both Peter and Roman struggle with their nature, as Peter risks becoming the same killer from the first season and Roman, after his full immersion with his true nature in the first season, has developed an insatiable hunger to kill. As they fight their enemies and deal with their situations, they must also deal with the monsters they are becoming, or have already become.’

Timed assessment - week 2

Below I have done a comparison of the first and second part of the timed assessment. The images on the left are week ONE and the images on the right are week TWO:

Overall I was happy with the results from the second week. I think I re-created the look from week 1 quite well. The makeup application is very similar in both images, however one thing that really frustrates me is the hair. I preferred the hair in the first week. During the second week I took a larger section of hair compared to the first. Also the curls on the second week seem to appear quite looser. The reason being is I couldn't find the tong I had used on the first week. I looked everywhere in the cupboards and even asked Sue if she had seen a specific Babyliss tong however there was no sign of it. I ended up having to use a larger sized tong, resulting to looser curls. Another element I also spotted when comparing the images, is that the curls on the second week start at about the neck area whereas in the first, they start beneath the ears.

Sue gave me great feedback whilst examining the assessment, however she did mention a few comments about the hair, similar to what I have said above.

I believe the pictures from the second week look quite underexposed compared to the first however this was due to a fault with the lighting in the room. After speaking to a few other girls, they seemed to have had the same problem as me.
